Understand Bali's food areas
Golden rule in Bali: eat where you are, not where the guide says. The island is big and congested — driving 90 minutes for a restaurant makes no sense. Each area has its own personality:
- Canggu / Seminyak — the trendy heart: healthy cafés, brunches, world cuisine, beach clubs. The most "international" food.
- Ubud — vegetarian, organic, rice-field views, refined Balinese cuisine. Great for eating clean and calm.
- Uluwatu (Bukit) — ocean-front dining, sunsets, surfer spots.
- Sanur / East — more local and quiet, authentic warungs and fresh fish.
Warung, beach club or café: which to pick?
The warung is the small local eatery: best value (a nasi campur for €2-3) and often the tastiest. The beach club is about the experience (music, pool, sunset) more than the plate — budget for it. The cafés of Canggu/Ubud are perfect for breakfast, brunch and working.
My practical tips
Book ahead for popular sunset spots (especially Uluwatu). Drink bottled or filtered water. Often pay cash in warungs. And don't be afraid to skip the Instagram spots: the best little eateries have no account.
